Clean Eating – No More Crap!!

Well I can’t promise that I will never not eat crappy food again, but I certainly am committing to myself to keep it to a minimum.  So I had a bit of a scare when I went home a few weeks ago. For the past little  while, I was having weird skin rashes and inconsistent bowel movements (yes this is the truth without being graphic). I had arranged with my mom to make a doctor’s appointment for me and off I went. After explaining my symptoms to her, she sent me off for a stomache x-ray. Turns out my intestines had moderate blockage. And who knows g they had been clogged up? I was prescribed laxatives and told to shape up and clean up my diet. And thus I have turned over a new health leaf.

What is clean eating? Eatwell.com describes it as, “…it’s about eating more of the best and healthiest options in each food groups — and eating less of the not-so-healthy ones”. Pretty simple if you think about it. So that means no more crazy Starbucks concoctions, good bye greasy burgers and canned food can be–well canned!

I am approaching 2 weeks of clean eating. The first couple of days it seemed like a piece of cake, I was almost excited. My body seemed to be enjoying it too. But by the 4th day, I started to get irritable and intense sugar cravings. I wonder if that is how a smoker that is trying to quit feels like. It was not a pleasant feeling. And I am pretty sure people around me saw a change in my normal personality.  My solution for this, was that I started having small squares of 70%% dark chocolate. With the higher percentage in chocolate, it has undergone less processing.

So how am I surviving this new lifestyle of clean eating? The first thing I did was buy my first blender! It was the best $15 of my life that I ever spent.  I am a fruit smoothie master now! Smoothies are also a great way to hide disgusting medicines in, like the laxative powder I had to take. I also have to find ways to make clean eating fun. Making meals with friends, googling fun recipes, and  dangle my own carrot in front of myself (a new handbag maybe?).

One downfall with clean eating is that fresh food is more expensive than the cheaper and less healthy alternatives. In the long run though, buying the fresher stuff will have my stomach and body saying thank you.

I have a new found love for California Salads. I ate a  couple last week from Milestones. And they make a great salad, but get expensive.  I have started making my own. To keep them interesting, I change up the nuts and fruits. Milestones makes it with strawberries and walnuts. Throw in some blueberries and almonds for some fun!

You know the old saying,  “your body is your temple,” well it is true.  I may not be able to undo the damage that I did to myself in my younger years. We only have one body, and we have to love it, nurture it and respect it.

  1. Whoa! Hope all is better. Yeah, definitely key to keep a balanced diet as well as exercise. You just have slowly make it a lifestyle instead of diving right in. Don’t think of it as a short term and you’ll get used to it. Obviously, indulge in some of your cravings on cheat days because what’s the point of living if you can’t even enjoy the some of the good things in life 😉

    1. Thanks! I am feeling a lot better. I had one of my first cheat treats today – a chocolate chip cookie and Starbucks Chai latte. But I am starting to b a lot more picky about where I eat and what I am eating. You are right, have to enjoy some of the good things in life :). Can you recommend any good, clean eating type restaurants in Ottawa?

  2. Clean eating…that’s kind of hard I’d say, so are you thinking of…something like vegetarian or vegan restaurants? haha
If so, some good ones off the top of my head are Cafe My House, Simplyraw, Table, Perfection Satisfaction Promise. Blossom Vegetarian on Elgin is new, I haven’t tried though. I’m also unsure if Zen Kitchen is any good anymore. I think it recently reopened. I’ve been a few times when Caroline Ishii was the chef a few years ago and it was damn good. Haven’t been since she left.

      1. Haha! It is ok! I am still eating meat. I am looking for places that more or less make everything from scratch (i.e. real chicken fingers vs. frozen ones”. LOL.

  3. How are you feeling these days? You should try overnight oats. They are the in thing for breakfast now. Or smoothie bowls! You seem to eat out a lot though so that’s probably not helping!
