When a pumpkin + a love for hip hop + fall + good knife and some patience are all added together, it produces a Kanye West Jack-O-Lantern. As a bonus, a healthy snack can result from the byproduct of the labour (more details on that later in the post).
For the longest time, I had been saying that I wanted to carve and create a really cool jack-o-lantern. And while my idea is not the most original since a stencil was involved, it did take a lot of time, patience and precision to make this Kanye masterpiece. While this was being carved, there was definitely some Kanye tracks playing in the background for some added inspiration (All of the Lights, Slow Jamz, Good Morning, etc.).
I totally jumped on the Halloween band wagon early. Back in early September when Target had their fall seasonality items out, I snatched up an extravagant pumpkin carving kit for a whopping $10. It came with a micro-blade saw which proved to be the key piece to making the Kanye Jack-O-Lantern so successful. When the grocery stores started displaying their large pumpkins, I spent a very long time hunting down the most perfectly shaped one to accommodate the stencil for the Kanye Jack-O-Lantern. It had to have a fairly oblong and flat surface, or else Kanye would have had a very deformed looking face.
Remember back to your childhood when you got to gut the inside of the pumpkin and feel the squishiness and pulpiness of it? It was nostalgic for me when I was doing this. In my recollection, my jack-o-lanterns used to consist of two triangle eyes and a crooked looking smile. I can confidently say my pumpkin carving skills have come a long way. I also had the help of JD who helped with the very thin and skinny areas of the Kanye face because I was too much of a chicken to carve them. In the end, I must say I was very happy and impressed with my Kanye Jack-o-Lantern. Look at him glow!
What About all of Those Pumpkin Seeds?
Keeping in line with my clean eating kick, I decided to seize the opportunity and keep the seeds from the gutting process of the Kanye Jack-o-Lantern and turn them into a healthy snack. Here is what I did:
- I washed the seeds and de-pulped them. They were extremely slimy!
- Next, I boiled them for about 10 minutes in salt water.
- Then I spread them all out on a cookie sheet and sprinkled olive oil and salt on them
- Lastly, I let them back in the oven at 325 degrees for 10 minutes, flipped them around a bit and popped them back in for another 5 minutes
- Let them cool for about a half hour and then stuff your face with them
This was overall a very successful and healthy evening. Let your creativity run wild and reconnect with your childhood memories; carve a pumpkin and share your pictures and comments :). Check out my other blog post on my DIY mini pumpkin masterpieces for more inspiration.
