Music Festival Season Commences

With the first weekend of Coachella at a close, it seems to be the unofficial kick-off musical festival for the spring and summer months. At the top of of must-see festivals is certainly Coachella.  Lots of people plan their vacations around this event, as it draws major A-List musical headliners like Pharrel, Outkast, Ellie Goulding, Lordes, just to name a few.

This year was not short of musical surprises. Some heavy hitters unexpectedly hit the stage causing a happy ruckus among fans:

  • Beyonce crashed her sister’s Solange’s set
  • Justin Bieber joined Chance the Rapper
  • Drake accompanied Jhene Aiko
  • Gwen Stefani and Busta Rhymes appeared with Pharrel
  • Jay Z and Diddy joined Nas

Next Up: Ottawa Bluesfest

This event is really just a drop in the bucket compared to Coachella, but it certainly means a lot to the Nation’s Capital.  The diversity of artists and performers balances many age and listening groups. I have been to this event a couple of times and it certainly is a summertime highlight.  I saw Erykah Badu, the Weekend and Norah Jones. For 2014, one of their biggest headliners is Lady Gaga. I am excited to see The Killers. I saw them exactly 10 years ago, way back at a hole in the wall joint in Toronto.

Next: Osheaga

I have never been to this one. Many of the girls I work with at Aritzia pre-book the dates months in advance to ensure they get the opportunity to go. It is held near Montreal. It is probably the most comparable music festival north of the US border. It has a bit of a West Coast feel to it. Some big names are drawn to this festival like Mummford and Sons, Kendrick Lamar, Ellie Goulding. They also have this weird and random Gumby looking character as part of their logo and marketing. It makes me laugh.

Last: OVO Fest

This is probably one of my favourites, mostly because I am a huge @Drake fan (don’t judge!). I saw the first OVO Fest, but haven’t seen any since. The first one back in  2009 had performances by Jay Z and Kanye and Eminem. He kicked off the annual with a huge bang back in it’s primitive days. Now this is a huge festival that thousands of Hip Hop and RnB Toronto fans look forward to each year. It is hosted by the hometown hero Drake. Every year fans wait in anticipation to see who will be surprise performances. I plan on attending again this year.  In the past, guest appearances have included:

  • Frank Ocean
  • Nicki Minaj
  • Wale
  • The Weeknd
  • Nas
  • Rick Ross

One Final Matter to Discuss about Music Festivals:

FASHION: What to Wear?

This has almost become a new fashion season to some. People plan weeks in advance what they are going to be wearing to the festivals, however often to only to get muddy and smelly and dirty should the weather turn wet and rainy.  I personally have work denim cutt offs with ankle boots and a fun printed tank top. I believe these events are not what you would take your Sunday’s best outfits to. Take a glimpse below for some trendy looks:
