So I am a little late in posting this, but I hope everyone had a happy and healthy New Year, because I know I sure did ringing in 2015 at Shangri La. After a crazy and hectic pre and post Boxing Day week working retail and my office job, it was time to jet set to my favourite city: Toronto.
Have you ever heard of the Shangri-La chain? To be honest I never had until earlier in the year when I had instagram creeped people’s photos and saw so many people enjoying the pool, restaurants, and rooms at this magnificent hotel. Shangri-la is a luxury resort and hotel chain originating from Hong Kong, but have establishments all throughout the world. To stay here, it comes at a pretty penny, but totally worth it in every which way. JD and I found an amazing deal for New Year’s Eve night way back in early November. If we had waited another week, we would have ended up spending double the amount.
Details of the Hotel
Service is of the highest level. To park your vehicle, one has no choice but to use their valet service. There was an ample amount of staff waiting to help you load and unload everyone’s belongings. The front desk team had their responsibilities and tasks down to a science to not keep waiting too long. Even the health and wellness centre at the hotel had outstanding service. No detail was missed.
Our room for the night was almost as big as the condo that I live in, and had a bathroom that everyone would dream to have in their home. The decor was very modern and simplistic with a bit a of a minimalist twist. My kind of style. I loved the marble in the bathroom, and the crisp, white linens on the bed. The toiletries that they provided in the bathroom were all provided by one of my favourite beauty brands: L’Occitane.
We spent a few hours down at the pool. One doesn’t have to travel to an all inclusive resort to get the same feel and service that one would expect. Just head on down to the pool area at the Shangri-La. The pool area had overhead lights that subtly changed colors every few minutes, constant overhead waterfall streams on one side of the pool, heated floors, and a salt water hot tub. The service team came by every half hour with cool wash cloths to help freshen up your face and glasses of water. One of my favourite parts of the pool area, were the cabanas that outlined the perimeter of the hot tub. The cabanas were inviting with a TV and pillows. If Shangri-La offered day passes to use the pool, I would be going!
Ringing in 2015
After a couple of naps, and a quick bit to eat, JD and I met up with Marcus of Fusion of Effects and some of his friends at the Drake One Fifty around 11pm. This spot was only about a block away from the Shangri-La, so it was a perfect spot to meet. Marcus brought his infamous Fujifilm Instax camera that produces instant polaroid type photos. We had a lot of fun with that. In addition, we picked up party crackers. I was quite surprised so many of the people that we were with had never experience the thrill and laughs of using party crackers. There is always a first for everything. At midnight, we all counted down and then all popped the party crackers.
The Drake One Fifty had a live DJ spinning a mish mash of tunes from Top 40 to random 90 tracks and stuff from the 80s. It wasn’t until about 1:30am when my preferred type of music, rnb, was in heavy rotation. Nonetheless, we all enjoyed ourselves and had a great time.
Cheers to 2015. I hope everyone has a healthy and happy year and I look forward to posting more random and fun musings.
