The “Side” Effects

Trends and fads come and go. For some reason, the concept of the “side” effect or trend put my head spinning in motion recently and I had a brainstorming session with myself on all of the different variations this has evolved into. Below I have recreated my internal brain storming session into an organized list. Let me know your thoughts on them. Note that some of these side trends are cool and others quite questionable and provocative :

Side Braid

This effect/trend has the thumbs up approval. Celebrities rock it while on the red carpet or just for a casual stroll around town. Classic style and easy to do. I still have not mastered it. I prefer it when someone else does it, because all of the strands have a better chance of making it into the braid.

Side Job

This effect/trend also get the thumb up approval. Sometimes you gotta work hard to play hard or  do what you gotta do to make ends meat and pay those bills.  I am one of those hardworking, double job type of people. I have my full-time job and my part-time gig. I love working hard and with passion at both.

Side Boob

This effect/trend gets a questionable approval under specific circumstances. It appears in Hollywood that side boob is becoming more and more popular. Some people have the bodies and boobs for it, no doubt about it.  However, in a normal society circumstance, this would probably be frowned upon. Those celebrities have glam squads that ensure everything is perfectly taped in place, and know all of the tricks of the trade to avoid a fashion mishap.  If most of us tried this on our own, it could potentially be a disaster waiting to happen. Sometimes tasteful side boob can be a very sexy thing in the right environment, like a Saturday night out dancing.

This is a hard thing to pull off, and should probably be left to the professionals. Jennifer Lawrence does pull it off well though. I applaud her.

East Side vs. West Side

This is an approved effect/trend. It is more of a geographical and logistical matter more than anything. So many people are either West-side or East-side proud, especially when referencing where they live or where they came from. I am a West-side girl when talking in terms of the GTA.  Even here in Ottawa, I live on the West-side of the city. Drake has a song that was recently released called “Days in the East” most likely referencing to his Toronto days spent on the East-side.  In NYC the, city is distinctly divided and referred as things like, “The Upper East-Side or,” or “The Lower West-Side.”. Being proud of where you come from or where you live is awesome!

Classic "West-Side" Sign. No doubting Tupac knew where he was from.

Main Chic vs Side Chick

This is a disaproving effect/trend, in my eyes at least.  No one should strive to be the side chic (or dude) or think that it is ok to be 2nd best or “the other option” when talking in terms of romantic relationships.  Either be number one or nothing at all.  Sadly,  parts of society seem to endorse this type of behaviour.  Celebrities in the lime light often fall prey to this. There is even a song about a “Main Chic” and there is reference to someone being a side-chic (if you care to listen, it is a song by Kid Inc. featuring Chris Brown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBCzn-oUBuk)

I am sure there are many other Side effects and trends out there.  We will leave those for a discussion another time.
